The comeback by former finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was cut short in Tuesday’s French Open quarter-final with a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Karolina Muchova.
Former No. 11 Pavylychenkova missed much of last season with a knee problem and played in Paris with a protected ranking.
The player competing in her 57th major was unable to keep working the magic which carried her to four wins on the Roland Garros clay as she went down to defeat in 98 minutes.
The soft-spoken Czech winner had little to say as she heads into a high-profile semi-final between the winner from second seed Aryna Sabalenka and popular Ukrainian Elina Svitolina – considered “French” due to husband Gael Monfils.
“I don’t know what to say,” the 33rd-ranked Muchova said. “It’s been an incredible two weeks.
“I’m just glad to still be in the competition.”
Pavlyuchenkova lost for the seventh time in eight Grand Slam quarter-final matches.
