Jasmine Paolini held off a furious fightback effort from Sorana Cirstea to emerge after two hours with a 6-2, 7-6 (6) win on Friday into the final of the WTA Dubai event.
The Italian ranked 26th will move into the Top 20 for the first time in her career on Monday as a result of a win in which she held off six set points from her Romanian opponent.
But the fouth Italian to reach the final of anelite 1000-level tournament made sure that did not happen.
Paolini seized the win on her second match point as Cirstea sent a return just wide over the sideline.
“There was a little bit of drama at the end,” the winner said. “I was nervous, she was fighting and I was trying to hit winners.
“It was very difficult. I’m happy with how I managed to play the tiebreaker – it’s amazing.”
Paolini will bid for the trophy on Sunday against the winner from world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and qualifier Anna Kalinskaya.
:She is also thrilled with her new ranking status: “It’s a major moment for me. I would have never believed I could make the Top 20 here,” the Italian said.
“I’m really happy and looking forward to playing a good final.
“But I’m confident, playing well and seeing the ball well. Let’s see.”
