Former World No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has announced on social media she is pregnant.
The 25 year old Japanese withdrew from the Australian Open earlier this week, having not played since September having kept a low profile on the tennis courts following a record of mental issues, especially coping with the stress of appearing at post match Media Press conferences, which are obligatory.
Announcing the news on Twitter she said: “2023 will be a year that’ll be full for lessons for me” adding that she hopes to return to tennis in 2024.
Osaka, who was born in Japan and raised in the U.S., said “one thing I’m looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, ‘that’s my mom.”
She has been dating American rapper Cordae since 2019 who she met at a basketball game.
Osaka’s current ranking is 47 and she has not played since September 2022 after withdrawing from a second round match in Tokyo.
