Angelique Kerber wrapped up her WTA career on Wednesday as the former world No. 1 lost a Paris Olympic quarter-final to sixth seed Zheng Qinwen, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(6).
Three-time Grand Slam winner Kerber, who made a comeback at age 36 after becoming a mother last summer, had announced before the Games that the event would be her last.
She led China’s Australian Open finalist 4-1 in the deciding set and missed out on a match point chance before going down in just under three and a quarter hours at Roland Garros after Zheng had to fight to remain in contention during the tense closing stages.
.Kerber fought off three match points for her Asian opponent before sending a forehand into the net on Zheng’s fourth chance.
