The great and the good of New York’s liberal elite flocked to Flushing Meadows on Monday evening to say farewell to Serena Williams.
Everyone from former President Bill Clinton to Rebel Wilson, Anna Wintour and even Mike Tyson turned up to say farewell, but the long goodbye will last until at least Wednesday as Williams won her first round tie, beating Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic.
Tyson was sat next to Martina Navratilova, who had brought her pet dog to the event, sat on her lap, as Clinton, observers noted, was seated next to sex therapist and talk show host, Dr. Ruth.
Others attending included Spike Lee, actor Hugh Jackman and Mayor Eric Adams.
Demand for the match was unprecedented with average resale ticket prices up 68 percent to $512 – and likely to go higher for Wednesday’s clash with No. 2 seed Estonian Anett Kontaveit.
