Serena Williams has become the latest name in women’s tennis to speak out on ‘missing’ Peng Shuai.
The Wimbledon and French Open doubles champion has not been heard from since accusing China’s former vice premier Zhang Gaoli of sexual abuse on the Chinese social media platform Weibo on November 2.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion’s comments come as US congress has called for Joe Biden to put pressure on China over Peng’s whereabouts.
Williams said “I hope she is safe and found as soon as possible. This must be investigated and we must not stay silent.”
“Sending love to her and her family during this incredibly difficult time.”
Other top players including Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka have already spoken out, and the hashtag WhereisPengShuai is trending online.
