Norrie one win away from first Masters 1000 title

New British No. 1 Cameron Norrie edged closer to a shot at the season ending ATP Masters Finals in Turin after a convincing 6-2, 6-4 win over Grigor Dimitrov in the Indian Wells semi-final.

It was his 46th match win this year.

He becomes the first British player since Andy Murray in 2016 to reach the final of a Masters 1000 event.

Norrie broke his Bulgarian opponent at the beginning of both sets, and the win will put him into the ATP Top 20 when the latest rankings are released next Monday.

Born in South Africa of a Welsh mother and Scottish father, both microbiologists, the family moved to New Zealand following an armed burglary at the family home in Johannesburg.

There Norrie excelled at tennis, squash, rugby, football, and cricket before concentrating on tennis at the age of fifteen.

He played for New Zealand as a junior, reaching No. 10 in the world, but with funding of only a few thousand dollars from Tennis NZ, his parents financed his overseas travel touring Europe for five months.

Aged 16 Norrie switched his allegiance to Great Britain, the nationality of his parents and spent three years in London on his own, living and training at the National Tennis Centre Roehampton.

He will play Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili in Sunday’s final.

The pair have met only once before, when the Brit came out on top 6-0, 6-3 indoors in Antwerp earlier this year.
