The ATP No. 1 does not – for this grass season at least – have the spectre of play at the All England Club weighing him down.

Medvedev said on Wednesday he will spend the Wimbledon fortnight relaxing for a few days after next week’s Mallorca event and then training at his Monte Carlo base for the fast-approaching summer hardcourt season in North America.

“Without Wimbledon coming up, I don’t have to preserve my body and I can play three tournaments in a row (after losing a final last weekend in the Netherlands).

“Grass is physically a very tough surface. Wimbledon is always in the back of your mind (during run-up events). Right now, it’s easier for me to have just this tournament that matters.

“I don’t have to think about how anything will affect my preparation for Wimbledon.

Daniil Medvedev can count at least one blessing from the ban on Russians playing Wimbledon.
