New York upgrade for Serena Williams as countdown to Flushing Meadows begins

The US Open announced seedings with no surprise on the men’s side  and an upgrade for 26th-ranked Serena Williams, who comes in as 17th based on past performances. She trails her sister Venus by one spot, with the elder sibling taking the 16th position.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer head the men’s side, with the Swiss looking for his first title here in a decade.

Nadal will be playing for the fit time in a fortnight since withdrawing from Cincinnati – Federer lost the final there to Novak Djokovic – in order to rest up for the final Grand Slam it event of the season.

Britain’s No. 278 Andy Murray will remain a dangerous floater in the early rounds, with the 2012 tournAment winner not awarded a seeding.
