The lack of fans at this month’s Estoril Open will hopefully be compensated by one of the best entries in the event’s recent history.
Officials at the Portuguese event on Tuesday confirmed the lack of fans onsite due to the COVID-19 situation at a clay tournament cancelled a year ago by five-month Tour tennis shutdown.
But with life returning somewhat to normal, hopes are high that the entry list headed by 14th-ranked Gael Monfils, No. 17 Fabio Fognini and ATP No. 9 Diego Schwartzman will prove to be an online crowd-pleaser.
Also signed for the tournament starting April 24 are Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta and Chilean Christian Garin.
Stefanos Tsitsipas won the title the last time the event was held in 2019; other trophyholders have included Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer back to back in 2006 and 2008.
