Night owl Medvedev into last 16 despite sleep deprivation

Twice runner up here Daniil Medvedev cruised into the last 16 of the Australian Open winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-3  against Felix Auger Aliassime making it seventh straight.

It was a highly satisfying performance especially considering Medvedev admitted the early-hours finish the night before had taken its toll, and not getting to bed until 7:00 am.

“It was not easy, I’m not feeling fresh, I’m not feeling 100 percent,”

“When I was very young, maybe till 21, I was going out,” he said, recalling his youth after beating Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. “And, it was not good for my tennis”

“I was not playing as I´m playing now, but maybe some practices without sleep, sometimes, helped me play today.”

The 27 year old No.3 seed is now married, with a daughter Alisa  and says he has sharpened his focus to ensure he’s fully prepared mentally and physically when he goes on court in the majors.

Medvedev next plays Portugal’s world No. 69 Nuno Borges who beat Grigor Dimitrov in four sets.
