New United Cup to mimic popular Hopman event

The ATP and WTA will combine forces in the new United Cup, a mixed event which mimics the Hopman Cup event which was last played in 2019 and was won by Switzerland with Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic.

London’s Times newspaper dropped the news on Tuesday during the US Open, providing only sketchy preliminary details.

The event will be played in several Australian cities – including the Hopman home venue of Perth – in the early part of January with at least a week spare before the start of the open on the 16th.

Unlike the Hopman, which was billed as a season tune-up, the new event will award ranking points.

Format, dates and participating nations are due to be announced imminently.
