Nakashima explores his family tree in Tokyo

Japanese-American Brandon Nakashima on Monday got a first look at his father’s homeland as he posted a defeat of local qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the second round of the Japan Open.

The No. 47 who claimed the San Diego title last month, is on a voyage of self-discovery as he competes this week.

“It’s my first time in Japan so I’m still learning a lot about it, but it’s very exciting. It’s beautiful so far,” he said. “Any time I get to learn more about my background I’m super excited, so I’m happy to be here.

“The atmosphere is really amazing. I feel right at home.”

Nakashima ran off a string of nine of the last 11 games to ensure victory.

“I’m happy that I served well today. It was definitely one of my goals at the beginning of the year, to win my first ATP title – to do it in my hometown (San Diego) was super special.”

Nakashima is working to book a spot in the NextGen Finals in Milan and currently stands sixth in the season points race.

Nakashima was joined as a winner by compatriot Frances Tiafoe, who defeated wild card Yasutaka Uchiyama 6-3, 6-4, advancing with eight aces as he won his seventh match from nine played.
