Nadal on fire with straight-sets start in Paris

Rafael Nadal began his quest for an historic 14th title at the French Open, kicking off with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 thrashing of Australian Jordan Thompson on Monday.

Spain’s King of Clay, who turns 36 next week, was his usual untouchable self on the Chatrier show court, dispatching Thomson in two hours, with 27 winners and 21 unforced errors.

The fifth seed earned a match with France’s Coretin Moutet, who beat former Paris champion Stan Wawrinka 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(2), 6-3 as the Swiss continues his comeback from injury.

Nadal, who came to the major without a clay title, has been struggling to deal with a congenital foot problem which he has carried his entire career.

But back on his favoured court, the Spaniard was comfortable in victory.

“It’s incredible to be playing another time on Chatrier,” Nadal said after posting his 106th career win at the tournament.

“I’m very content with this win. The first round is always special and I was happy to win in three sets.

“This is the most important court of my career and it brings strong emotions. It’s a unique sensation to play here.”
