Rafael Nadal’s back injury niggles appear to be improving with perfecting timing as the Monday start of the Australian open ticks closer.
Spain’s ATP No. 2 has so far sat out this week’s ATP Cup due to his problem. But ATP Cup captain Pepe Vendrell said the 20-time Grand Slam winner is quickly getting better.
“He’s working very hard to recover his best feelings. Obviously he couldn’t play any matches during the week. It’s a situation that we have to study.
“But day by day he’s improving. We will see tomorrow if he can play.”
The test might come if Nadal feels fit enough to front up for the concluding tie for the 2020 runners-up to Serbia; Spain take on Italy for a place in the final of the teams competition.
“(Nadal) practised and his feeling was better,” Vendrell said. “We are thinking as a team and will try to choose the better option.”
