Nadal extends his shelf life with Laver Cup commitment

Rafael Nadal will extend his tennis career at least into the early autumn as the Spaniard returns to Team Europe at the upcoming Berlin edition of the Laver Cup in Berlin September 20-22.

“I’m very happy to be playing Laver Cup in Berlin for Team Europe,” Nadal said in a Monday statement. “I have some really special memories from my experiences, including all the emotions from London two years ago playing alongside Roger for the last time.” 

 “At this stage in my career I really want to go out there and make the most of every opportunity I am given. 

“Teaming up is always an incredible experience and I have always enjoyed it, the competition is different and exciting. I’m looking forward to going to Berlin and helping Team Europe win back the Laver Cup.” 

Nadal will join a Europe ide alongside protege Carlos Alcaraz, fourth-ranked  Daniil Medvedev and German Alexander Zverev, with Bjorn Borg serving as captain for a final time.

Nadal, 37, with 22 Grand Slam titles, is testing his fitness this week at the Madrid Masters after returning to tennis for the first time in months last week in Barcelona,

The Spaniard will be making his fourth Laver appearance as he winds down his brilliant career.

Borg was pleased to have Nadal on board: “Rafa is an absolute legend in our sport, a true champion in every sense of the word.

“It’s my last year as Captain. Having him on Team Europe this year was a goal of mine and I’m thrilled he has accepted my invitation and will be with us in Berlin. ”

 Team World, run by John McEnroe, is so far due to field Australian Alex de Minaur and Americans Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul.
