Lorenzo Musetti dominated on home clay Tuesday, crushing Austrian Denis Novak with the loss of just one game to move to the second round of the Sardegna Open.
The opening rout took well under an hour, a major contrast compared to the three and a quarter it took for Australian John Millman to finally contain Argentine Federico Coria 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3.
Musetti, who reached last month’s Acapulco semi-finals from a qualifying start, played the third round last week in Miami as his career begins to take flight.
The 19-year-old swept the first 10 games against Novak before securing the 53-minute victory in the wind to next play Brit Dan Evans, the top seed on the Mediterranean island in the debut edition of the 250 event.
Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, seeded fifth, salvaged five match points to overcome to send out Joao Sousa of Portugal 1-6, 6-1, 7-5; he now gets British qualifier Liam Broady.
