Andy Murray blew into the second round of the Toronto Masters on Tuesday as he won his first match in Canada since lifting his third trophy here eight years ago.
The Scot hung tough against Lorenzo Sonego to produce a 7-6 (3), 6-0 victory in just over two hours at the event he won in 2009, 2010 and 2015.
Conditions were challenging for the pair, with gusts carrying the ball and direction changing during points.
Murray struggled to take control of the 90-minute opening set – he saved a pair of set points – but rolled through the second to advance thanks in part to 44 unforced errors off his Italian opponent’s racquet.
“I’m really pleased to have won in blustery conditions, the wind was constantly changing.
“It really wasn’t pleasant to play in.
“It was tight in the first set, there were a lot of opportunities on both sides,” the 36-year-old said. ,
“I managed to sneak through the tiebreaker, he probably got disappointed and I relaxed a bit in the second set..
“I hope to build confidence and win a few matches.”
