Andy Murray remains convinced that the abdominal problem which forced him from the Toronto Masters will be healed in time for his US open start in a fortnight.
The 36-year-old withdrew minutes before his third-round encounter with Jannik Sinner, giving the Italian young gun a pass into the quarter-finals.
Three-time Grand Slam winner Murray made his apologies to disappointed fans in an on-court statement and left the door open for a return to the courts for the New York Grand Slam starting August 28.
“I had a very similar issue last year in Stuttgart before Wimbledon which forced me to miss the Queen’s Club tournament and I was able to play Wimbledon,” the Scot said.
“It took me about 10 to 12 days before I was feeling good again.”
Murray also told the crowd: “This (injury) is not as bad as that but obviously the danger if you compete and play on it is you make it worse.
“I’ll need to see how it develops over the coming days and hopefully feel better in a few days. “
