Murray mistakes a Ruud awakening

Andy Murray had a night to forget at the San Diego Open, in an error-riddled performance, going down 7-5, 6-4 to No. 2 seed Casper Ruud.

Murray was tied up at 5-5 in the first set before Ruud took control, and it got no better in the second with the former world No.1 dropping five consecutive games, including a run of seven consecutive unforced errors.

“On the opposite side of the net from me was a legend of the game,” Ruud said.

“It’s been an unfortunate couple of years for him, but it’s great to see him back and I think he was playing at a high level today.”

The Norwegian nearly slipped up at 5-3 in the second set but kept his cool to break Murray and take out the match.

“It’s nice to be here in San Diego. It’s my first time. It’s a great city,” he said.

“Tennis players, we usually never get to see much of the west coast… to have an event here in San Diego, I hope they can repeat it for more years in the future.”

Cam Norrie won the Battle of the Brits in San Diego on Thursday, beating Dan Evans 7-6 (3), 6-3 to reach his ninth career quarter-final.
