Andy Murray will extend his season on grass with a wild card entry into next week’s ATP event in Rhode Island.
The 250 tournament staged in the millionaire yachting enclave of the smallest US State will be a return for the Scot, who played the tournament in 2005 and 2006, reaching the semi-final in the later edition.
The three-time Grand Slam winner produced a half-decent pre-Wimbledon run last month with a Stuttgart final which he lost to Matteo Berrettini.
An abdominal injury suffered on the German grass kept the five-time winner away from Queen’s Club, London, with Murray managing just a single win over James Duckworth at the All England Club last week.
Also playing Newport – home of the Tennis Hall of Fame – will be tournament debutant Felix Auger-Aliassime, another who had a Wimbledon to forget.
The Canadian went out in the first round to Maxime Cressy.
