Andy Murray’s fairytale return to Melbourne ended on Thursday night, beaten in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 by qualifier Taro Daniel.
The world No. 120, became the lowest-ranked player to defeat Murray at a grand slam.
Murray struggled to find his form against the young Japanese player, who was more mobile than the Brit, quickly taking the first set.
Daniel was quick around the court as Murray was unable to hit through his opponent.
Murray took only two of 11 break points in the match as Daniel came up with all the right answers.
Murray started well in third but surrendered at 5-4 and Daniel, was quick to move in for the kill.
The former world No.1 received a warning for slamming his racket to the court, before Daniel clinched his second match point to move into the third round.
