Andy Murray passed a test against an ATP elite on Monday, upsetting fifth seed Alexander Zverev 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to reach the third round at the “Cincinnati” Masters being staged in New York.

The Scot who wasted most of the last two seasons after a pair of hip surgeries, rose to the occasion at the US Open site amid the COVID crisis to knock out the inconsistent German.

The performance may not have been perfect, but it proved that the 33-year-old is fast finding form on his new metal-and-plastic hip.

“There was just a bit of rustiness from not playing and having to close matches out against top players for a long time,” Murray said.

“I was satisfied obviously to get through it, get a win against a top player after having not played for such a long time.

“I don’t think either of us played particularly well when we were close to the finishing line, but [that was] maybe to be expected since we haven’t played any matches for such a long period.

“He didn’t serve so well at the end, which obviously helped me but I fought hard and it is a good effort to win that after not playing for a while.

“I get another opportunity to compete tomorrow, and that will give me a good idea of where my body is at.

“I expect to be tired, but I will try to push myself hard regardless of the result. I said before the tournament that I wanted matches.”

Murray will face Canadian Milos Raonic in the next round. The big hitter blasted 23 aces in 6-3 7-5 victory over British No 1 Dan Evans.

He was the only Canadian success though, 12th seed Denis Shapovalov fell 7-6(4) 3-6 6-4 to Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff and Felix Auger-Aliassime lost 6-7(4) 6-2 7-6(5) against Tennys Sandgren.

“I don’t think either of us played particularly well when we were close to the finishing line, but [that was] maybe to be expected since we haven’t played any matches for such a long period,” said Murray.

“He didn’t serve so well at the end, which obviously helped me but I fought hard and it is a good effort to win that after not playing for a while.”
