Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares dispatched Bjorn Fatangelo and Christopher Eubanks on court 17 in straight sets.
It was a shaky start for the seventh seeded pair, Soares’ serve was the first to break after a series of great returns from Eubanks and Fratangelo. However, Murray and Soares quickly got back on serve, breaking Fratangelo in the next game.
The first set went to a tiebreak, Murray and Soares won 7-4, looking much more convincing.
The second set saw growing confidence from the tandem. In the first game on Eubanks’ serve, Murray got the break with a strange crouching overhead winner.
Eubanks and Fratangelo took it close in the 4th game, but failed to get back on serve.
It was a straightforward match from then on, with both sides holding serves until the finish. Murray was the last to serve, finishing the match unbroken. The final score was 7-6, 6-4. The match lasted 90 minutes.
This pair are real contenders for the championship, with Soares’ former partner and number one seed Mate Pavić is out already. The Brazilian is one step closer to defending his 2020 title, and Murray to replicating the 2016 success.
Murray and Soares are the seventh seeds and look set for success. They move to the third round, where their opponent isn’t known yet.
