Garbine Muguruza had to fight off a charge from Belgian comeback artist Elise Mertens on Friday, with the Spaniard wasting six match points before claiming a spot in the final the WTA evebt in Duba.
The ninth seed who has played and lost semi-finals here in 2015 and 2018, came good on a seventh match point as he overhead propelled her into her third final of the season.
The effort was massive as Mertens failed to duplicate her comeback from three match points down a day earlier at the Aviation Club.
Muguruza prevailed in just over two hours and will wait a Saturday opponent as Barbora Krejcikova faces Swiss Jil Teichmann in the other semi-final.
“It took me a few match points to close it out,” the winner of two grand Slam titles said.
“She was getting every ball back, I’m so happy to go through in two sets
“You have to concentrate all the time or the opponent will take advantage. I was 5-3 up with a match point, it was so tough to close it out.
“I’m very excited to reach another final, I’m glad to have this opportunity to hold another trophy.”
