Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina revealed they have parted ways using their preferred means of communication – social media.
After less-than-successful Australian Open campaigns for both – Monfils lost in the first round while Svito lasted until the fourth – the pair who have been together since 2019 announced they are no longer together.
“The decision was incredibly difficult, because we still have love for each other,” a statement read.
“But it’s just two best friends realising it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible.
“We won’t be commenting beyond this, and we thank you all in advance for respecting our privacy.
“Sending lots of love to everyone.”
Monfils was a tearful wreck after going out in the Melbourne first round to rising Finn Emil Ruusuvuori while fifth seed Svitolina was beaten at the start of the second week of the major by Jessica Pegula.
Even as late as last week, the Ukrainian WTA player passed an affectionate message to her boyfriend, writing “Gael” with a love heart on the post-match camera set up for winning player autographs.
