French showman Gael Monfils has nothing but praise for the tennis explosion in neighbouring Italy.
The No. 20 is the top man among 10 French players in the ATP ranking Top 100; but Italy is trailing right behind with nine competitors among that elite list.
The Italians have quality on their side, with Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini standing seventh and fast-rising Jannik Sinner ranked 14.
“It’s incredible what the Italians have achieved,” Monfils said, noting that Berrettini has also played quarter-finals this season at Roland Garros and the US Open.
“Sinner is also paying very well (quarter-finals in Paris and New York plus two titles this season).
“During the last two and a half years, no country has acheived what Italy has.. I’m not surprised.
“Italy has struck gold with these two.”
