Daniil Medvedev will not defend his title at the ATP Rotterdam event after withdrawing eight days after his heartbreak loss to Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open.
Officials revealed the pullout on Monday by the world No. 3 who led Sinner two sets to love but fell in five sets in the Melbourne title match.
Sinner is due to travel to the Dutch port city as he steps back onto court after his breakthrough Grand Slam title.
Medvedev cited fatigue after playing more than 17 cumulative hours in Melbourne.
The record number of sets he played during the 24 hours and 17 minutes he was on court in Melbourne appear to have taken their toll.
“Unfortunately I have to pull out of Rotterdam,” he said in a statement.
“After an incredibly tough and long run in Australia my body (and especially my right foot) is not recovered enough yet to play and defend my title.
“I love playing in Rotterdam, have a long history with the event, and look forward to coming back in 2025.’’
