Daniil Medvedev tore through Stefanos Tsitsipas in 96 minutes on Saturday to blow into a sixth straight ATP final with a 7-6(5), 7-5 win at the Shanghai Masters.
The US Open finalist who has been on fire since the summer, is chasing his third trophy since early August and his second since losing to Rafael Nadal in the five-set Grand Slam final at Flushing Meadows.
Medvedev, with a leading 58 wins on Tour this season, will bid for his fourth trophy this season after Sofia, Cincinnati and St Petersburg.
He has played in eight previous 2019 finals, also top of the ATP.
The 23-year-old ranked fourth, will aim for the seventh trophy of his career; he now stands 28-3 since late July when he began his sizzling hardcourt campaign.
His opponent will be fast-improving Alexander Zverev, who stopped fellow London ATP Finals candidate Matteo Berrettini of Italy 6-3, 6-4.
Zverev now stands as next in the qualifying queue for the eight-man season wrap for which Medvedev has already booked his spot.
The 22-year-old German will be playing his sixth career final at at Masters 1000 – he has won three of them; he polished off Berrettini with an 11th ace on match point.
“It feels great, obviously. I felt like I’ve played some decent tennis this week and being in a Masters 1000 final here in Shanghai is also something very special for me,”Zverev said.
“I’m looking forward to the final and hopefully I can play some good tennis tomorrow.”
Defeat for Tsitsipas came less than 24 hours after the Greek qualified for the first time for London; he has now lost all five matches he has played against Medvedev.
Zverev has beaten the Russian in all four of their previous matches, including twice in 2018.
