Medvedev tames Thiem to send Austrian out in Vienna

Daniil Medvedev ended the home stand of Dominic Thiem, defeating the Austrian 6-3,6-3 on Friday to advance to the quarter-finals of the ATP Vienna event.

Former No. 3 Thiem, now eight months into a wrist injury comeback and finding consistent form, was unable to get on top of the former No. 1.

Thiem now heads to Paris where he was given a wild card ito qualifying for the final event of the ATP regular season, the Paris Bercy Masters starting on Monday.

Thiem, 29 and ranked 113, is just a few steps away from his season goal of returning to the Top 100 and could get the job done in Paris.

Medvedev saved the lone break point he faced while breaking Thiem three times.

“It was a tough match and could have gone either way,” the winner said. “At one moment in the match I started to put a lot of pressure on his serve.

“I didn’t (give) him many opportunities on my serve; that was the key today “

New father Medvedev will bid for the semi-finals against Jannik Sinner, who beat Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 6-3.

Italy’s Sinner is playing after a month off to rest an injury.
