Daniil Medvedev faces off against resurgent Canadian Denis Shapovalov on Sunday in the final of the ATP Vienna event, as the former No. 1 plays his fifth final of the season.
Medvedev won a fifth semi-final on Saturday as he defeated Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-2 while Shapo, whose first six month of 2022 were modest at best, backed up a win three weeks ago in Tokyo over Borna Coric, defeating the Croat 7-6(4), 6-0.
Medvedev owns 14 career titles while his Canadian final opponent aims for a third title and second this season after Sydney.
“It was a great match,” Medvedev said after overcoming Dimitrov.
“There were a few moments where I thought I should have done just a little bit better, to go in front earlier and try to build the pressure earlier.
“Then I managed to stay consistent and, in the most important points, managed to raise my level. That was enough today, and I’m really happy with my level.”
Dimitrov out-hit Medvedev 21 winners to 17, the Bulgarian was unable to break through.
Medvedev remains unbroken on serve this week as he seeks a second title of the season and bids to qualify for next month’s eight-man ATP Finals in Turin.
