Daniil Medvedev advanced to the semi-finals at the ATP Vienna event on Friday, pulling alongside Carlos Alcaraz with 63 wins this season.
Medvedev defeated Karen Khachanov 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, all but knocking the loser out of any qualification chance for the eight-man ATP Finals from November 12 in Turin.
World No. 3 Medvedev now stands 63-14 for the season while No. 2 Alcaraz is 63-9.
“I hope I can get one more, you never know,” Medvedev said of his joint leading position.
“Tennis is a strong sport and we have strong opponents. So hopefully I can get one more win at least or maybe more.”
Medvedev called his season so far “amazing. But it’s not finished yet, so I want to try to finish it even stronger.”
Medvedev is also aiming to defend a title for the first time in his career after winning each of his first 20 trophies at a different venue.
He will be playing on Saturday in the Austrian capital in his 49th Tour semi-final.
Medvedev shut down Khachanov in two and a quarter hours.
“It was a very close match, so of course mentally you have to be strong and it was a long one,” he said.
“But at the end, one break each set. I’m happy that I managed to make two, and he only made one.”
