Daniil Medvedev hammered Yu Len Hsun 6-2, 6-2 in less than an hour to establish opening-match superiority at the Miami Masters on Friday.
The Russian, playing as top seed for the first time at a Masters 1000 tournament, showed no mercy to a 37-year-old Taiwanese player now ranked outside of the Top 1000.
“It was not easy to play today with the windy conditions,” the winner said.
“I’m happy I managed to keep my nerve, play solid and not make so many mistakes… Everything worked well and I am looking forward to the next round.”
Medvedev concluded in 56 minutes with 24 winners to claim his 15th victory of the season.
He moved into a third-round showdown with Alexei Popyrin – another player with Russian heritage – after the Australian put out two metre-plus US giant Reilly Opelka 6-4, 6-2..
“Popyrin is a really great player, I practised with him a lot during pre-season and I know that he can play some great tennis, so it will be a tough match,” Medvedev said.
