Daniil Medvedev extended his win streak to eight games on Friday at the expense of Felix Auger-Aliassime as he knocked out the top seed 6-2, 6-4 for a semi-final spot at the ATP Rotterdam tournament.
Former No. 1 Medvedev, now ranked 11th, handed the Canadian holder a fifth consecutive loss in their series.
FAA had won his last seven matches but was unable to make an impression on a fired-up Medvedev, who also reached a final-four place last month in Adelaide.
The sixth-seeded winner advanced in 83 minutes on the back of five unforced errors while FAA struck 20.
“Today was my best match of the week, but I have to build on this,” Medvedev said.
“Many times you’re going to play your best tennis in the last match, so that’s definitely a goal.
“But I’m happy with my level today, beating someone like Felix in straight sets.”
Medvedev will aim for his first ATP final since October in Vienna when he takes on Grigor Dimitrov, who saved a pair of match points to defeat Australian Alex de Minaur 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6) in their quarter-final at the Ahoy stadium.
It’s been a long time between drinks for the Bulgarian, who last played a final in 2018 here in the Dutch port city.
“I kind of know the plan for the game,” Medvedev said. “I’m preparing for a tough one tomorrow.
“Grigor’s such a great player and today was a great match from him, a great comeback actually. So I’m ready for the tough fight.”
