Daniil Medvedev moved closer to a possible second title at the Toronto Masters on Thursday with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Lorenzo Musetti to reach the quarter-finals.
The second seed won the title here in his only previous appearance two years ago and now stands three wins away from his second in a row.
The winner of four hardcourt titles so far this season needed 93 minutes to reach the last eight, finishing with 16 winners and 19 unforced errors.
The winner said that he needed to deal with a distracting wind.
“It was not the worst wind but it was changing from fast to slow.
“You can’t hit full power in those conditions and you don’t know what to expect.
“It was not easy for either of us – but I did enough to win.”
The 27-year-old now owns 48 total victories this season, which include Masters trophies Miami and Rome.
He stands a formidable 22-3 at Masters 1000 events this year.
