Top seed Daniil Medvedev found his way to a 6-4, 6-2 Tuesday victory over Corentin Moutet as the Russian won his first grass match of the season at the ATP event in Mallorca.

Medvedev now finds himself facing a form player in the second round, taking on fifth seed Casper Ruud after the Norwegian dispatched Tennys Sandgren 6-2, 6-3 in 69 minutes despite 11 aces from the American.

Medvedev shook off his opening loss a week ago in Halle, where he lost to German Jan-Lennard Struff.

The Russian has a history on grass despite never passing the Wimbledon third round; he played a semi-final at Eastbourne in 2017 and did the same at  Queen’s, London in 2019.

Medvedev had to recover from a 0-3 early deficit against Moutet but found his way and swept the last five games of the set.

In the second, he raced to a 5-2 margin, but needed three match points to finally go through to the second round and his date with tennis Viking Ruud.

Ruud is making progress on grass after winning his first Tour-level match on the surface in Monday’s opening round; the No. 14 has reached six quarter-finals or better this season, including his second career title last month in Geneva on clay.
