Daniil Medvedev notched his Masters 1000 match win century as he advanced to the third round 7-5, 6-4 over Jack Draper on Saturday.
The second seed who won the title here a year ago, needed just over an hour and three-quarters to dispatch the 40th-ranked Briton, finishing on his first match point.
Medvedev owns 20 titles but has never defended one, meaning a possible repeat of Rome success next weekend would break that spell.
The winner took advantage of 30 unforced errors from his opponent, finishing with 15 winners and holding his unforced count to 18; he broke five times.
“I knew I wanted to win this match but it was not easy,” said the recently injured seed.
“Conditions here are much different than last year and also form Monte Carlo and Madrid.
“They are slow and heavy and you really have to work to make a winner.
“You both get tired but I’m happy I managed to remain strong. I’m pleased with my level and am looking forward.”
