Medvedev ends his clay ordeal for 2023

Daniil Medvedev made no secret that ‘s happy to step away from the clay following his first-round loss at Roland Garros on Tuesday.

The second seed lost to Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild 7-6 (5), 6-7 (6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The world No. 2 said a quick goodbye to his least favourite surface after losing an opening match at a major for the first time since Paris, 2020. He arrived at the event with a Rome title on clay to hand.

“Every time it (spring clay season) finishes I’m happy.

“I’m happy again. Doesn’t matter, one time quarters, one time fourth round, a lot of times first round.”

The winner of five titles and 39 match wins this season said he won’t carry pleasant memories of the match with him as he steps onto grass.

“There was wind and a dry court – I had a mouthful of clay since probably the third game of the match,” he complained.

“I don’t know if people like to eat clay, to have clay in their bags, in their shoes, white socks, you can throw them to the garbage after clay season.

“Maybe some people like it – I don’t.”

He added: “I’m happy to have it finished. I’m going to have to have a good time off.

“There will be a lot of relaxing in the next days. I’m happy to go to the next challenges even if, for sure, I wanted to stay longer in Paris, even if it’s clay.”
