Daniil Medvedev claimed a third career semi-final at the ATP Finals on Wednesday with a 7-6 (7), 6-4 defeat of Alexander Zverev as the pair played for the 18th time in their careers.
World No. 3 Medvedev, champion at the year-ender in 2020, defeated two-time tournament winner Zverev in one and three-quarter hours, reaching the final four with a 2-0 mark without losing a set.
Zverev has lost five times to Medvedev this season, winning one match.
Medvedev broke to start the match but ended up battling in a first-set tiebreak after trailing 4-1.
He then secured victory with a break in the final game, winning on his first match point from his opponent’s return long over the baseline.
“I started well,” the winner said. “I felt he was a bit off so I was trying for a double break in the first set.
“He then started playing better and I had 10 minutes of playing worse.
“I’m happy I was able to completely re-group. I was better in the crucial moments at the end of both sets.
“By winning the tiebreak in the way that I did (comeback) I was able to put pressure on him.
“I’m happy with my level and already looking forward to the semi-finals.”
Medvedev is playing in the year-end tournament for a fifth straight year, reaching the final in 2021 after his trophy the year before.
He leads the Tour this season with 66 match victories.
