Jannick Sinner knocked off another top rival on Wednesday, with the on-form Italian defeating Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2), defeating the ATP No. 3 for the first time in seven attempts to win the Beijing tournament.
The Sinner success came a day after he knocked out world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the Chinese capital;the event is part of a nonsensical ATP scheduling experiment which now sees some finals played at midweek instead of the long-traditional Sunday.
No explanation for the increasingly bizarre calendar plan has ever truly been forthcoming, through the confusion it creates is nothing short of world-class chaos.
Sinner needed two hours to produce the victory
“Daniil, thanks for letting me win at least one match,” Sinner joked .”We’ve had some very tough battles, especially this year.
“Thanks for making me a much better player. I have been training a lot to beat you. My team are working a lot. It is special to share this moment with you.”
The Italian won his 49th match of 2023 and moves into uncharted territory inside the world Top 5.
Sinner is looking good for a spot in next month’s eight-man season finals in Turin; he has never qualified into the elite event previously.
