Madrid Masters TD Feliciano Lopez is already thinking more than half a year ahead, with the Spaniard dreaming of a return of Rafael Nadal to the spring event in the capital.
Nadal, has been out with a right foot injury for months, briefly surfacing for two matches in early August in Washington before going back to Mallorca to work out his physical problems.
The king of clay last competed in early June in a Roland Garros semi-final where he lost to Novak Djokovic.
“We hope to see Rafael Nadal in the next edition,” Lopez said of the five-time local champion.
“He is still young (35 as opposed to the 40 which Lopez celebrated on Monday).
“He has shown that he can overcome injuries. He will be welcome because he is the most beloved player in the tournament.”
Madrid tournament officials only last week completed a deal with the city to stage the event in the capital until 2030.
