A Russian journeyman ranked 158th sent Andy Murray on his way Wednesday with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 defeat at the ATP Rennes Challenger.
Murray, playing on a wild card entry, failed to make much progress as he tries to whip his game into shape after four frustrating years of injury recovery.
Roman Safiuulin earned a quarter-final place in less than two hours, defeating Britain’s former No. 1 with 14 aces and five breaks of serve.
The 116th-ranked Murray lost serve three times in the final set to slump to defeat in front of an excited public.
Murray will carry on in Metz in eastern France on another wild card, hoping to improve his luck.
