Serena Williams dropped a hint on social media of a possible comeback as the former No. 1 who has disappeared from sporting sight teases a return.
Given the wingspan of online media, the trail of breadcrumbs from the 23-time Grand Slam winner could be just a feeler to gauge public reaction – or the real deal for the 42-year-old who last played a match nearly two years ago.
Williams was given what amounted to a public farewell at the US Open 20 months ago after losing in the third round to Ajla Tomljanovic.
During the previous season she barely played 20 matches, habitually dropping from view after the US Open each year while pursuing life as an American celebrity.
But according to Tuesday social posts, the mother of two is apparently interested in a re-emergence.
“I’m ready to hit some balls again,” Williams wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
That tweet echoed a previous false alarm from her account late last year which amounted to nada.
Williams said she was “encouraged” to make a return as she relayed an incident she said occurred in 2023.
“I was at a bookstore the other day and someone came up to me and said I retired too early…”
If she follows through on her big plan, Williams would join the likes of colleagues and fellow Grand Slam champions Caroline Wozniacki, Naomi Osaka, and Angelique Kerber in returning to the courts after childbirth.
She won the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant with her daughter, and then made a comeback the following year.
