Ljubicic: Nadal could mimic Federer’s retirement plan

Rafael Nadal could well duplicate the 2022 retirement scenario of Roger Federer, announcing the end of his career at the Laver Cup.

That is the theory of former Federer coach Ivan Ljubicic, who co-guided the Swiss legend until he wrapped up his tennis at the Laver edition two years ago in London.

Nadal, who turns 38 next month and is attempting one final comeback from months of injury drama, has eased himself back into the Tour mix and is also committed to the Europe Laver squad for September in Berlin.

Federer went out in a blaze of sentiment, nostalgia and glory at the O2 and it would not surprise Ljubicic if Nadal did the same – if he is able.

“It’s possible, but it’s not probable,” the Croat said.

“That he has decided to play Laver is positive.

“It means that he wants to continue, but we know that he won’t play for another ten years…”

Meanwhile, Nadal has next week’s Rome Masters start and Roland Garros to concern him.

The Spanish icon whose run of three winning matches ended this week in the Madrid fourth round, could still have his eye on a tempting Paris target – a record 14th title at the clay major.

“We have known Rafa over these 20 years. We know his champion mentality,” 2005 Davis Cup champion Ljubicic said.

“As was the case for Federer at Wimbledon, Rafa will only play in Paris if he believes he can go all the way.

“He won’t go there to make a presence.

“Rafa knows very well what he needs, we’ll see if he can find the right sensations in the coming weeks.”
