Laver Cup boss hints at sniffing for Saudi cash

Roger Federer’s business partner is sniffing for dollars in Saudi, with longtime money man Tony Godsick hinting that the controversial kingdom could be a prime target for future editions of the Laver Cup.

The American whose career as an agent has helped the now-retired Federer – and himself, naturally – to  hundreds of millions in sponsorship and other income sounds ready to shift the international team competition to the desert as soon as the payday is assured.

“One day the Laver Cup could be in Saudi Arabia. We rotate between European cities and cities in the rest of the world,” he said..

“I expect Saudi Arabia will be part of this discussion at some point in the future.”

The Europe v World competition was founded by Federer and his company in 2017 and will play a seventh edition in September in Berlin.

Federer, 42, has ruled himself out as captain of Europe, saying that other legends should have a chance to guide the side when current boss Bjorn Borg moves on.

“I see myself as a team captain one day, but I would like to see someone in this position who belongs to the generation after Rod Laver,” the Swiss icon told the well-connected Tages-Anzeiger.

“Someone in the 50 to 65 age group. These guys deserve it first, before it’s my turn.”
