The spat between Nick Kyrgios and Lleyton Hewitt has taken another turn with Kyrgios accusing the Australian team captain of ‘throwing him under the bus’ over his controversial United Cup withdrawal.
The world No. 22 revealed he would not take part in the tournament on Thursday, saying he did not want risk injury before the Australian Open.
Yet he recently played in the Middle wast, picking a six-figure cheque for his services.
Hewitt slammed a ‘lack of communication’ over Kyrgios’ withdrawal at such a late stage, adding “I was in the same boat as all the other players yesterday, I didn’t know anymore.”
Hewitt added he had to wait “a little while” to receive a response from Kyrgios. Asked how communication could be improved, he replied: ‘Just responding, that’s the normal way of doing it.”
Kyrgios responded via his social media feed, accusing Hewitt of “throwing him under the bus” after another Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic was also a late withdrawal.
