Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis thrilled a capacity Rod Laver Arena on Thursday as they stormed past Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 7-6(7-4), 6-4 to reach the Australian Open Men’s Doubles final.
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis hit 13 aces and 32 winners to dominate the match as Kyrgios ran foul of the umpire – and the crowd – several times.
“I have played a lot of singles matches around the globe with amazing atmospheres,” Kyrgios said out of breath and excited.
“But this week with Thanasi playing in front of you, nothing beats this. This is insane.”
The pair will face Matt Ebden and Max Purcell in Saturday’s final – an all-Australian men’s doubles event for the first time since 1980.
