Kyrgios notches double-duty Washington wins

Nick Kyrgios went about his business on court with deadly efficiency as the Wimbledon finalist won two matches in a day on Friday to reach the ATP Washington semi-finals.

The No. 63 who has recently been giving the sport his undivided attention after years of dabbling. knocked off two Americans in quick-fire order.

He first dispatched serve-bot Reilly Opelka 7-6 (7-1) 6-2, finishing off the last quarter-hours of a third-rounder interrupted on Thursday by rain.

Kyrgios then rose to the occasion in a big way with 35 aces as he trashed Frances Tiafoe 6-7 (7-5) 7-6 (14-12) 6-2 to set up a Saturday semi with unfancied Swede Mikael Ymer.

Temperamental Tiafoe did little to help his own cause, throwing his racquet in anger after losing his chances on five match point chances in the mega-tiebreak second set. with Kyrgios staying alive to finally pull off the three-set victory.

“Frances put himself in every position to win the match,” the Australian winner said.

“In those moments I wasn’t really thinking too much. I was just trying to stay in the match and I survived. “Physically I was really fresh in the third set and served well.”
