Kyrgios content to head into the Open cold

Nick Kyrgios is not bothered as he heads into Monday’s Australian Open start without any warm-up event to speak of.

The focus of all Aussie tennis attention for the next fortnight pulled out just prior to the start of the new United Cup in late December and did not bother to enter last week’s ATP event in Adelaide.

“I’ve always been a player that doesn’t need too many matches,: last summer=s Wimbledon finalist said.

“I played 12 to 13 events last year; I felt like that was a lot of tennis. I’m always going to have to keep that in mind.

“There are players that need a lot of matches going into a Grand Slam. But me, I just like to feel fresh,

“I like to feel like I’ve got everything under control.”

The No. 21 who begins in the first round against Roman Safiullin said he’s trying to ignore his label of top title tip.

“There’s so many capable people here. There’s always talk about me being a favourite, big expectations.

“I’m just trying to take it a day at a time. There’s so many people here that can cause damage.

“I’m just doing everything right at the moment.”
