Number one seeded Croatian duo Mektic and Pavic were knocked out of the doubles draw today in only the second round, by fan favourite Australian duo Kyrgios and Kokkinakis.
The upset means another early exit for the Croatians in the last two slams.
The final score was 710-68, 6-3.
The Aussie pair are in the draw on a wildcard and defeated another Australian duo in round one of Bolt and McCabe.
Mate Pavic is a former Australian Open champion, but Nikola Mektic only found relative success last year, when he made the final with Pavic.
The pair made the top spot of the doubles rankings last year after winning Wimbledon and three masters 1000 tournaments, as well as Olympic gold in Tokyo.
Now the Croatians are out, leaving Britain’s Joe Salisbury and America’s Rajeev Ram as the top remaining seeds.
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis, who are both out of the singles draw, now advance to a third round meeting with either Koepfer and Struff, or Behar and Escobar. The best either Australian has managed in their home doubles slam.
